General Dwarf Hamster Information

Blueberry Hamster is really an improper name for these hamsters. Pet stores like to give them cutesie names. They are actually Campbells Russian Dwarf Hamsters. Mine are a grey-ish color that in the right light has a hint of blue..hence the name Blueberry Dwarf. Dwarf hamsters are the most common for pets. They are easy to take care of and very cute. They are said to be social with their own kind if introduced at a young age but, my two aren't. Dwarf hamsters have been known to nip, usually if they feel threathened. The Campbells dwarf hamsters are also know for their furry feet. The Campbells Russian Dwarf Hamster is nocturnal but, is active at times during the day. They do like toys and toilet paper rolls and a must is enough wood shaving to burrow and tunnel in. These hamsters do learn your voice, their names and a few other little things depending on how you have raised them. They weigh around a ounce give or take a little. On average they live about 2 years..some live longer some shorter. They need a balanced diet of dry hamster food. They enjoy treats also.

Rocky

Rocky is the first hamster we bought. He is adorable and loved very much. Rocky weighs 0.9 ounces. He is very tiny and we think he may have been the runt of the litter.We have had Rocky about a year and 4 months. Last winter Rocky got lost. His cage door was left open and when I saw it I panicked. We looked everywhere for him. I placed peanut butter and pieces of cheese on paper plates on and put them in various places on the first floor and in the basement. We called and called him and listened very close for him to make the slightest noise. Hamster don't make a noise very often and when they do it is just a very soft sqeek. After a few hours and a thorough search we came to the conclusion he must have fell down a heat vent. After 2 days my son was in the basement and heard a slight scratching sound on a vent running along the ceiling. He had gone so far down the dark lonely vent that he ended up right next to the furnace. Luckily there was a filter and guard there as he was only a few inches from the fire. We had to cut a hole in the vent to get him out. He was scared senseless and had gotten even smaller than what he was before from having no food or water and dwarf hamsters love water. Rocky does not have the same personality as he did before his getting lost. He is still adorable,loved a lot and spoiled rotten.

Fatty

Fatty is the second hamster we bought but only after Rocky got lost. Shhhh..don't let him know that. He is loved just as much as Rocky but, has a totally different personality. Fatty loves to burrow a lot. We also pick on him and tell him he has big ears. He also likes to nip a little on your fingers but, it's never hard. In his house is a small terra cotta flower pot he loves to curl up in that and sleep. He also weighs more than Rocky. Weighing 1.3 ounces. Fatty also eats more than Rocky but, he was bigger when we got him he was diffenatly not the runt of his litter. Fatty's nails also grow real fast and he has to go to the vet to have a nail job about every 6 weeks. It might have to do with all the junk food he likes :) He is most adorable, loved a lot and spoiled rotten too.

This is the vet that my hamsters go to. So far Fatty is the only one who has ever been. He goes to get his nail trimmed. They are very quick about doing it. I am to scared to try clipping them myself because they are so small and I am worried I will cut him. To vist their web page click here.
